On-Campus Housing at Kellogg

McManus Center - The Kellogg School of Management operates the McManus Center, a seven-story apartment complex with 208 living units consisting of one- and two-bedroom apartments as well as single and double studio apartments. A few double studio apartments are designed to accommodate families with up to two children. Housing here is primarily for the MBA students and tends to be near capacity each year; however, PhD students have been accommodated. PhD students interested in McManus should complete an application by May 1 to be considered for an apartment in the coming fall. Submitting an application does not guarantee an apartment in the fall; therefore, students should consider other housing options as well.

For more information and to apply to live at McManus, visit the Northwestern McManus website

Other On-Campus Graduate Housing at Northwestern

Engelhart Hall - Accommodations at Engelhart Hall range from twin-studio, shared apartments for single students to two-bedroom apartments for families. University apartments are furnished except for linens, kitchen utensils, dishes and silverware. Additional details for Engelhart Hall are available online.

The Garrett Place Apartments are another option for graduate students. The Garrett Place Apartments are comprised of furnished studios, as well as one, two and three bedroom apartments available to Northwestern graduate students, partners and families. The Garrett Place Apartments are ideal for students with classes located on north campus. Given the array of apartment styles, these apartments are well suited for single graduate students, those living with spouses or partners, and those with families. Apartments include private bathrooms and kitchen units. Residents may participate in a university meal plan but are not required to do so.

Off-Campus Housing
Evanston is a university town, so there is a variety of housing options available to students depending on what they are looking for and where they want to live. Evanston is also close to Chicago for those who would prefer to live in the city. Northwestern University does not provide an apartment finding service. However, Northwestern does have a number of web links under Off-Campus Housing to places that specialize in advertising places to rent or sub-lease. Most housing available for September occupancy is listed in early August, so a trip to Evanston at that time is advisable.

Foster Families and Home stays for International Students
International students looking for temporary housing when they arrive in the United States should take a look at foster families and home stays. This program is administered by the Community Council for International Students. International students are housed by a local individual or family for two to seven days before their permanent housing is available.

Additional Housing Resources
For additional housing options, students should consult the local newspapers, such as the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Evanston Review and Chicago Reader for apartment rentals. Online versions of these publications are available. Trulia is another free online resource for rentals and community information.

Childcare Resources
For PhD students who are also parents, the Office of Childcare, Family Resources, and Work Life at Northwestern provides helpful information about childcare options and provider referral services in the Evanston and Chicago area. Tips for finding childcare, a listing of childcare programs, backup childcare resources, and financial assistance programs are provided online.  Additionally, there are resources for student parents found through Northwestern’s Graduate School.
